Zach Braz of the group These Green Eyes has a side project called Lucky Tray Day and that Pop Punk group recently cut a version of Tom Petty's "Christmas All Over Again". For some reason, they've retitled it "Thanks For The Christmas Card". Still, it's a decent performance of a song that, as yet, hasn't been overdone. You can download the track at Facebook, Reverbnation or just use the widget above.

Decemberween - Devon Kay & The Solutions NAME YOUR PRICE AT BANDCAMP Punks In Vegas is a music site that focuses on Punk and (mostly) Pop Punk music with reviews, features, interviews and stripped down sessions. For the last month or so, they've been asking some of their favorite musicians to perform acoustic versions of their favorite holiday tunes (covers or originals). The stripped down sessions were then remastered and collected up in a compilation to benefit the Manilow Music Project, providing support to school music programs. The compilation is "name your price", so you can download it free at Bandcamp. But, should you be feeling generous, that's where your money will go. Something about acoustic and Pop Punk that just doesn't seem to mesh, but there are a few interesting bits here. Nothing to break the bank over, but for free... I enjoyed Wear Your Heart, as you might gather from the video. Other highlights, to me, were Brock Frabbiele's "Another Christmas At The Bar" and The Sheds' "100 Reslutions". And the only track that's actually recorded well enough to be air-worthy is Devon Kay & The Solutions' "Decemberween". Jesse Pino's got a nice voice as well.
Well, at least Detroit's Eric Maier knew enough not to cover "Christmas Time Is Here". As Skyway Traffic, Eric picked Fall Out Boy's "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out" as his holiday cover. It's a Pop Rock blast and a half. Download it free on Bandcamp (technically "name your price"). Make sure you hang in for the big finish.
Another Pop Punk band, this one from Boston, but with a very sweet Christmas song...one I could easily see other artists covering not too far down the road. Call Me Anything has chosen to make this one a free download through Facebook and Soundcloud and it should bring them many new fans. "Christmas (All I Need Is Here)". It's my sad duty to inform you that only those tracks below in green are free downloads; the rest are just streaming. So, you know, probably not too many we hadn't found for you before. But maybe you'll see something you missed and maybe you'll enjoy the stream. "Christmas List" by Transmit Now was new to me and I dug it the most. Pure Volume has been doing this for a few years now and it's still a popular site, though Facebook and Bandcamp have probably lessened the traffic some. All the green links below take you to the sampler page. Once there, just stroll through the playlist to find the tune you want. If it's a free download, just click where it says "free mp3". 1. Christmas List - TRANSMIT NOW Pop Punk from South Jersey, yo. Major League are just back from touring Japan. Their Christmas single is "This Holiday" and, although we're awash in Pop Punk bands these days, I like this one for the way they finish it. Simple device, but it works. You'll see. You can listen to "This Holiday" on the band's Facebook page and download it free through Mediafire. The Bright And Early moniker reflects this young band's work ethic, which they believe has helped them to make tremendous inroads in the music business in their relatively short time together. They hail from the South Jersey/Philadelphia area and they're generally described as a Pop Punk band. But they'll mix it up some, toss in a metal edge here and there--anything so long as it's catchy and it rocks. This cover of Mariah Carey's signature "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is another departure for Bright And Early in that it's acoustic. But it's still catchy. And it's free. To download it, just hit the arrow on the right. And visit the band on Facebook and Bandcamp. And catch up with their latest awesome single "Always On My Mind" on iTunes. More Pop Punk! This free single is from the band Only On Weekends. Head to the band's web store and scroll down past their debut album to find the appropriate button to start your download. You can also get it from Bandcamp or Pure Volume. Only On Weekends hails from Cherry Hill, New Jersey--which is the southwestern part of the state, not far from Philadelphia. The band got started some ten years ago, but only recently put all the pieces together and now they're ready to roll. Lots of energy on "Christmas Everyday". Listening to the lyrics, you might think the title should be "All I Want For Christmas Is You", but that title has become as identified with Mariah Carey as "White Christmas" is with Bing Crosby. Of course, "Christmas Everyday" is a title I associate with Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, but let's not spoil Only On Weekends' weekend. Don't know if this one's made the rounds yet, but it's pretty funny--although a definite PARENTAL ADVISORY needs to be maintained (for strong language). Still....funny. This comes to us from the New York Pop Punks of Giants At Large and was actually released as part of a free EP back in February. It's been free all that time and I'm just catching up to it. Oy. Anyway, you'll find it on Bandcamp. It is what it says it is--a "Christmas Song For Your Mixtape". Virginia Pop Punks Back To Normal have released their first Christmas song, "Refuse To Break For Christmas' Sake". The group's sound is not quite Blink 182, but a little more New Found Glory. The difference here is Sarah Camden who provides most of the lead vocals and plays the bass. There aren't many woman fronting pop punk bands, but Sarah's more than holding her own. "Refuse To Break For Christmas' Sake" is a free download from Pure Volume, although (assuming it works) you're free to use the Pure Volume widget above. And pay a visit to Back To Normal at their Facebook page or at Reverbnation. |
